Connecting will change everything…

Lennox is a troubled teenager with no family. Ava is eight months pregnant and fleeing her abusive husband. Heather is a grieving mother and cancer sufferer. They don’t know each other, but when a meteor streaks over Edinburgh, all three suffer instant, catastrophic strokes…

…only to wake up the following day in hospital, miraculously recovered.

When news reaches them of an octopus-like creature washed up on the shore near where the meteor came to earth, Lennox senses that some extra-terrestrial force is at play. With the help of Ava, Heather and a journalist, Ewan, he rescues the creature they call ‘Sandy’ and goes on the run.

But they aren’t the only ones with an interest in the alien … close behind are Ava’s husband, the police and a government unit who wants to capture the creature, at all costs. And Sandy’s arrival may have implications beyond anything anyone could imagine…

My Opinion

A road trip story like no other! The beautiful story of human connection will have you considering your life and those around you in a magnificent way…Oh… and you’ll also adore and be smitten with Sandy! I know I am!

Doug Johnstone steps out of his crime writing comfort zone to entrust his first Sci-Fi vision. WOW does he deliver! The Space Between Us featured on ‘Between The Covers’ with Sara Cox on BBC Two and you can see why! The writing is stunning. The story is gripping and beautiful and the characters rich and captivating.

The whole way through the story I found myself actively rooting for what is essentially a band of misfits harbouring an alien. It sounds crazy and far-fetched but it could happen! This is a sci-fi story for everyone. Even if you have never read sci-fi before, Doug will gently guide you through. A natural blending with his normal genre, crime, ensures that the book is going to be a staple for every bookshelf.

There were moments in this book that were truly touching. Watch out for the moment that Ava first connects with Sandy, it brought a tear to my eye…truly. The whole novel is ultimately about human connection and the beauty of such connections.

The Space Between Us is a beautiful, touching book that needs to be read by everyone! It will burrow into your soul and stay there. Thank you Orenda Books for the review copy.
