Pilgrim’s Dirge - Issue 1 Review

Writer: Toben Racicot

Art: Matt Leoni

Colours: Martina Bonanni

Publisher: Indie

My Rating: 🏹🏹🏹🏹

C.O.R.E. (Celestial Orbit Reparation Effort) returned to Earth after the cataclysm to eradicate an alien race. Orin Daniels was among those soldiers. He now fights for survival, trying desperately to return to his family, but C.O.R.E. is on his trail.

Pilgrim's Dirge is a science fiction adventure in a post-apocalyptic solar system. The cataclysm awoke an ancient evil whose return threatens not just Earth, but all existence. Orin must band together with unforeseen alien races to eliminate this threat and save the galaxy. If Orin thought Earth was a chilling place, he has no idea what awaits in the dark of space.

My Opinion

I was lucky enough to be asked to review this upcoming Kickstarter project and I am so thankful that I was. I thoroughly enjoyed my reading of this comic. I'm anticipating great things in it’s future.

Writer and letterer Toben Racicot has a fantastic story developing ability. I was instantly drawn in by Orin as a character due to his humour, fighting skills and personal circumstances. Everything that makes him an awesome character is so intriguing and every panel increased the deep interest in his story. If you imagine the movie I Am Legend and think of Will Smith’s character, Orin is in a similar situation, well that’s what it reminds me of anyway. The story develops throughout the issue in riveting fashion. There are so many angles to it but Toben never leaves any aspect out. The comic story is set for an incredible ride that will be a sure fire hit!

The art by Matt Leoni is exquisite, the character designs, the regions, earth are all designed with exquisite detail. I'm a big fan of Orin’s suit, it has elements of the game destiny about it. It basically looks like my dream space suit when I was younger. I adored the look and feel of earth, it was apocalyptic but had reminders of ‘home’ as well as seeming like an alien planet. Adding the fantastic colourisations by Martina and we are presented with a phenomenally beautiful comic. Martina ensures that the comic is bright and engaging but also dark and mysterious when required.

Pilgrim’s Dirge is set to be a fantastic series and one that I am so thankful to get the chance to read before the Kickstarter launches. I highly recommend this comic to anyone who is a fan of stories that are either sci-fi or dystopian. The characters are engaging and interesting, the art is incredibly detailed and fantastically unique. Please do back the Kickstarter so we don’t miss out on what could be your new favourite series!

“Wait--I’m not cut out for adventure and destiny. That’s not me. I can’t do this. I’m only one man.” - Orin
