Plot

Based on the true story that will inspire the world, Warner Bros. Pictures’ King Richard follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. Two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith stars as Richard, under the direction of Reinaldo Marcus Green.

Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.

My Opinion

One of the greatest movies in modern times all about two of the greatest sports stars of all time and their devoted and inspirational family.

Will Smith delivers one of the most outstanding performances that I have ever seen him give. Scrap that. Will Smith delivers one of the most outstanding performances of all time. Will transforms into Richard Williams in this family driven sports epic. He encapsulates everything about Richard down to the way he walks.

Alongside Will stands his on screen wife, Aunjanue Ellis who is absolutely exceptional as Oracene Williams, devoted wife and mother. A special mention has to go to both Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton who are simply exceptional as Venus and Serena Williams. Their emotionally divine performances round off one of the greatest collections of performances that I have seen in a film in a long time.

King Richard is an epic that can be enjoyed as a film by itself or as a sports movie. The quality delivered by the cast, director and production teams ensure that we should all be keeping a close eye on the Oscars with this one. Will is definitely an award in my opinion and the performance of Saniyya, for me, deserves multiple awards for what is a stunningly mature performance for someone so young.

King Richard is out now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download and I implore you to pick it up and give it a go, you will not be disappointed.
